The Warsaw Ghetto

The Warsaw Ghetto

In October 1940 the nazis established the "Ghetto" in Warszaw, building a wall around several blocks of the city, where 400.000 jews and were imprisoned under very hard conditions. They had a food ration for about 220 calories each day, whilst the germans themselves in Warszawa had around 2600 calories each day.

Hunger, the cold and diseases killed 100.000 of the jews in the ghetto, and those who didn't die soon was about to be sent to Treblinka and other concentration camps for Hitlers' "final solution". During july, august and september 1942 300.000 jews from the ghetto was sent to the consentration camps and murdred there. The rumours about the camps sparked the Ghetto Uprising in January 1943 when the Germans started the final expulsion of the remaining Jews. The Jewish fighters had some success: the expulsion stopped after four days and the resistance organizations took control of the Ghetto, building shelters and fighting posts and operating against Jewish collaborators.

The final battle started on the eve of Passover of April 19, 1943, when a Nazi force consisting of several thousand troops entered the ghetto. After initial setbacks, the Germans systematically burned and blew up the ghetto buildings, block by block, rounding up or murdering anybody they could capture. Significant resistance ended on April 23, and the Nazi operation officially ended in mid-May, symbolically culminated with the demolition of the Great Synagogue of Warsaw on May 16.

The building on the photo is one of the few ones still standing from the Ghetto, at Bagno/Prozna in central Warsaw. We stayed at Paul's familys small apartement close by. The area is a strange architectural and historical mix of these from the Ghetto, to old communist concrete monsters and new modern buildings.

Day 301 of 365

Hmmm ... Today was Red Dead Redemption day. I played that game all day.

Something worth mentioning for today is that I was a bit surprised this morning to see my weight. Gone up to 81kg. I was like wth that's not right. Weight again it goes down to 79kg. To make things short couch potato too much these days. I am not sure if those extra kg are fat or muscle. I would like to hope it's muscle coz I've been working on the pecs these days. What the heck I will just assume they are all fat to keep me motivated for do some exercise. So I did. I took another walk tonight to burn them nasty calories. 7.2km 400 calories according to this site.

Man I love my walk. It's easy and it's relaxing. It takes a bit longer to complete but what the heck. I got time to kill ... So that pic I took while walking on Major Mckenzie.
